Gifts-in-Kind Policy
The Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library will be pleased to consider donations of materials that support current curriculum and research conducted at the University of Toronto. Over the years the generosity of donors has substantially contributed to the Library’s collections.
The Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library follows the general guideline of the Robarts Library's Gifts Policy.
While welcoming gifts which will enrich the Library’s collections, we nonetheless strongly discourage “dropping off” of materials without prior arrangement, as the costs of disposing of unwanted materials is very high.
Once received, the material becomes the property of the University of Toronto. The Library has the right to dispose of duplicate or unwanted material in the most appropriate manner it sees fit. Thus, donations will not be returned to the donor.
Prospective donors should contact the designated librarian (below) in order to discuss the gift or donation.
All offers of gifts-in-kind of books and other published materials should be directed to subject librarians.
If the collection being offered is deemed to be of interest to the Library, the donor will be asked to provide an itemized list of their intended donation so that it can be fully considered in relation to the University of Toronto’s academic programs and existing collections.
All offers of non-published materials (archival or manuscript items) or rare books should be directed to a subject librarian and the director of the Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library.
For any gift over an appraised value of CAD$1,000.00, the donor is required to complete a Deed of Gift stipulating whether or not they have owned the property for more than three years, and whether it was acquired with the intention of donation. They must also assert that the donor is the sole owner of the property and that the property is free of debt or lien. If this form is not filled out, the University's Office of Advancement will not issue an income tax receipt.
