This project focuses on the Lienü zhuan (Categorized
Biographies of Women) of Liu Xiang (77-6 B.C.), the
earliest extant book in the Chinese tradition solely
devoted to the moral education of women. The book consists
of biographical accounts of female role models in early
China and became the standard textbook for women’s
education for the next two millennia. This digital archive
serves as a publicly accessible tool for scholarly
exploration of early woodblock editions of the Lienü zhuan
held by the National Library of China, as well as other

This is a large online database of Chinese works complied by
Academia Sinica in Taiwan. It contains very rich contents
that span across Chinese historical classics, Buddhism
scripts, various local gazetteers of Taiwan, as well as
other primary resources on Taiwan and its history.
Particularly, it has an online version of the Encyclopedia
of Taiwan (臺灣文獻叢刊).

This website hosted by the U.S. National Park Service makes
available five e-books respectively aabout the history of

Yizhige is an e-book portal of Chinese classic literatures
that makes accessible contents of classic books and supports
full-text search across the classic titles.

Eminent Chinese of the Ch'ing Period (ECCP) is a
biographical dictionary published in 1943 by the United
States Government Printing Office, edited by Arthur W.
Hummel, Sr., then head of the Orientalia Division of the
Library of Congress. Hummel's chief collaborators were Dr.
Tu Lien-che (杜聯喆) and Dr. Fang Chao-ying (房兆楹), Chinese
scholars of Manchu descent who were married to each other.
The database is developed from the print version to allow
for online searching, reading, and downloading of the ECCP
articles.

This searchable Flickr database contains over 12 million
historical copyright-free images (photos and drawings) that
are sourced from more than 600 million library book pages
scanned by the Internet Archive. Streaching half a
millennium (1500-1922), the vast range of images shows how
the portrayals of things have changed over. The database is
created by Kalev Leetaru, an American academic.

The webpage features Selden Map of China at the Bodleian
Libray of Oxford. Dating from the late Ming period, it
shows China, Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia,
Southeast Asia and part of India. The map shows shipping
routes with compass bearings from the port of Quanzhou
across the entire region. This is the earliest Chinese map
not only to show shipping routes, but also to depict China
as part of a greater East and Southeast Asia, and not the
centre of the known world.

Edward Bangs Drew joined the Chinese Maritime Customs
Service in 1864 after earning his BA degree from Harvard.
In 1868, Drew was appointed a Commissioner of the Service, a
position he held for decades. During that time he collected
photographs that document clothing, customs, and daily life
in 19th century China, as well as Drew's life and career,
including family and social gatherings, public appearances,
and events and ceremonies.

already been highlighted on the list. Readers can visit the
website to explore collections concerning other areas.

The Chinese in California, 1850-1925 illustrates
nineteenth and early twentieth century Chinese immigration
to California through about 8,000 images and pages of
primary source materials. Included are photographs,
original art, cartoons and other illustrations; letters,
excerpts from diaries, business records, and legal
documents; as well as pamphlets, broadsides, speeches,
sheet music, and other printed matter. These documents
describe the experiences of Chinese immigrants in
California, including the nature of inter-ethnic tensions.
