Book Talk Event: Swimming Back To Trout River

Sold Out - Join us for a special discussion about the novel Swimming Back To Trout River, by Associate Professor of East Asian Studies, Linda Rui Feng in conversation with Lynne Kutsukake about writing, immigration, and translation. There will be a short reading from the novel followed by a conversation, which will cover topics such as writerly craft and the possible relationships between scholarly writing and fiction.

Linda Feng, Associate Professor of East Asian Studies, will be in conversation with fellow novelist Lynne Kutsukake about Feng's recent novel, Swimming Back to Trout River, which was longlisted for a 2021 Giller Prize. The novel is set in China and the United States, and explores the themes of music, migration, and how the titanic forces of history play out in smaller, more recessive lives. There will be a short reading from the novel followed by a conversation, which will cover topics such as writerly craft and the possible relationships between scholarly writing and fiction.

Lynne Kutsukake is a Japanese Canadian novelist and short story writer. Her debut novel, The Translation of Love, won the Canada-Japan Literary Award and the Kobo Emerging Writers Prize for Literary Fiction. Her short fiction has appeared in The Dalhousie Review, Grain, Prairie Fire, and Ricepaper and twice been anthologized in The Journey Prize Stories. She studied modern Japanese literature and has translated the short stories of Mizuko Masuda. Before turning to writing, she had a long career as a librarian at the University of Toronto East Asian Library.

The event will be held in-person at the Flexible Learning Space, Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library, 8th Floor, Room 8049, Robarts Library, Toronto. Light refreshments will be provided and attendees can sign up to win one of three copies of the book during the event (courtesy of Simon & Schuster Canada).
