The Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library is delighted to share that the University of Toronto community can now access the Papers of Old Shanghai: Social Shanghai, 1906-1912 collection through the University of Toronto Libraries.  

The Papers of Old Shanghai: Social Shanghai, 1906-1912 collection includes digitized copies of the magazine Social Shanghai which began as a monthly publication for "ladies" but expanded to cover all aspects of social life in Shanghai. It was the first foreign-language magazine published in China that reproduced substantial photographs in its pages. This collection consists of 34 issues included in volumes 2-14. 

Topics covered in the publication include fashion, sports and recreation, gardening, education, infrastructure, travel, municipal council departments, books reviews, personal sketches and more.  

Of interest to scholars in media studies, sociology, Chinese studies, literature, and political science.
