The Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library is excited to share that the University of Toronto community can now access the Papers of Old Shanghai: Societies and Clubs, 1890-1942 collection through the University of Toronto Libraries.  

The Papers of Old Shanghai: Societies and Clubs, 1890-1942 collection consists of records created by clubs led by French, German, American, and British Shanghai residents. As well as, records created clubs organized by Western residents in Shanghai. It also includes non-nation-specific clubs focused on sports, hobbies, professions, and other missions, such as hunting, racing, rowing, women's clubs, cartoonists, and alumni organizations. The collection comprises reports, yearbooks, handbooks, membership lists and rules, meeting minutes, correspondence, and other publications produced by these clubs. This collection provides a repertoire of rich and unique material relating to the social landscape of Shanghai and the International Settlement from the 1860s to 1940s.  

Of interest to scholars in media studies, sociology, Chinese studies, literature, and political science.
