
This is a collection of minutes from meetings held by the Board of Directors of the Shanghai Municipal Council during its tenure. The Shanghai Municipal Council was founded by a group of Western businessmen to govern the daily matters and infrastructure in the Shanghai International Settlement (1863–1941), and by the mid-1880s had gained a practical monopoly over the city’s businesses. Topics covered include sanitation, transportation, telecommunication and postal service, taxation, urban planning, gas supply, street lighting, rickshaw operator management, animal protection, and police system. Of interest to scholars of East Asian studies, postcolonial studies, economics, history, and urban studies.
