The Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library is delighted to share that the University of Toronto community can now access the e-resource Papers of Old Shanghai: Press, Education, Healthcare & Charity 1863–1948 Collection through the University of Toronto Libraries.  

Papers of Old Shanghai: Press, Education, Healthcare, and Charity, 1863–1948 Collection includes a variety of materials on civic aspects of life in Shanghai.

  • The press-focused portion of the collection includes a directory of newspapers, records about the success of North China Daily News & Herald Ltd., and digitized books on the history of Shanghai's press.
  • Education in Shanghai is represented through catalogues, reports, handbooks, and student journals produced by prominent educational institutions and studies on Christian education in China from the 1870s to the 1930s.
  • The collection also includes annual reports from 1963 to 1947 from Shanghai's various hospitals, along with historical accounts and annual reports created by charity organizations such as the Shanghai International Red Cross Society, the Relief Society for Shanghai War Refugees, China Welfare Fund, and others.

Of interest to scholars in sociology, anthropology, public health, public and Christian education, Chinese studies, and media studies.
